Rainy days and Wednesdays.

A tricky old day today from start to finish. It’s August after all, so within five minutes of leaving the house I was back home for long johns and extra waterproofs. Bloody miserable August.

We were off to long pool again , a change of plan in itself because we had intended to fish the res. The trouble is the res is so exposed. It has a better selection of species and we both fancied a few more roach and a few less bream and carp but needs must. The long pool is sheltered and we are both of an age to choose comfort over excitement.

As ever I was on the bread, but Pete was mad keen to try hemp and tares for roach and I don’t blame him. These days we choose our spots to fish the way we want for what we want rather than for the size of the fish. That said, we don’t turn big fish down, but we are always hopeful of finding an undiscovered gem. We didn’t.

Pete did ok, he had over a dozen roach and really only got them to feed just as it was time to pack, but I was mythered out with fat fish. Carp are such a pain, they drive out the roach, take all day to land and ruin the swim while you do it.

Still, I did squeak out one roach, a three pound bream and one skimmer. I suppose a match angler would be happy with three carp for around twenty pound but I would sooner they left me alone.
