English partridge in frost -

Return to
The story behind the picture.
English partridges are, like most of our wildlife, struggling. Changing farming practices and, I believe, the increasing numbers of french partridges released by shoots, have and still are impacting on their numbers, by restricting available food sources. This bird emerged in front of my hide as I waited for hares and the frost on its back clearly demonstrates just how good their insulation is; better than mine was at the time I assure you! At night coveys of partridges will arrange themselves in a circle on open ground, every bird facing outwards and on the lookout for prowling foxes.
