I have a large alder tree in my garden and over the years it has bought some wonderful birds in during the autumn when the tiny cones become much sought after for their seeds.

Apart from redpolls and siskins, it is particularly attractive to these brightly coloured goldfinches and now they are the commonest birds in the garden during the winter.

Although it is the niger seed that keeps them coming back, I shall always be thankful that my alder drew them in originally.

Taken as the sun set.
